A youth who left a man partly disabled after a savage beating has been jailed for seven years

A youth who left a man partly disabled after a savage beating has been jailed for seven years. The victim, Mr Joseph Pintos, had to use a walking stick for a year after the assault and has lost nearly all power in one arm, Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard yesterday.

Eugene Wynne (17), of Belclare Drive, Ballymun, Dublin, pleaded guilty to assaults on Mr Pintos, Garda Jacinta O'Reilly and Garda Mick Burke in Ballymun last year. Det Sgt Matt Murphy said Wynne believed his former girlfriend had been having a relationship with Mr Pintos, whom he attacked with a metal bar and a screwdriver in February 1998.

Judge Frank O'Donnell backdated the sentence to April 19, 1998, and set a two-year review date.
