A SURFING trip to Donegal by a group of school friends ended in tragedy when one of the youths fell 12m (40ft) while trying to climb into his apartment, an inquest has heard.

Joseph Olwill (17), Shanliss Way, Santry, Dublin, died at Tyrconnell apartments, Bundoran, on August 25th last at the end of a week-long holiday by 14 friends.

They had stayed in two apartments while surfing and celebrating three birthdays.

Donegal south coroner Dr Diarmuid Hegarty was told the teenager climbed out of a window even though friends advised him to wait until they found a key.
