A 17-YEAR-OLD youth was in custody in Limerick last night after a "home-made" handgun and ammunition were recovered in the city.

The youth was arrested shortly after midday yesterday during searches carried out in the Garryowen area of the city.

An "improvised home-made" handgun and four rounds of ammunition were discovered in the searches according to a Garda spokesman.

Meanwhile, in a separate investigation, another 17-year-old youth appeared in court in Co Cork yesterday on charges of assaulting three gardaí earlier this year.

Two male gardaí and one female member of the force were out of work for a number of weeks following the assault, which took place when they were called to deal with a public order incident in the Co Limerick town of Newcastlewest last May.

The teenager - who cannot be named for legal reasons - appeared before the vacation sitting of Mallow District Court yesterday. He was charged with three counts of assault causing harm and a number of offences under the Public Order act. He was also charged in connection with a burglary in Newcastlewest, alleged to have taken place last Monday.

Judge Tim Lucy remanded the youth in custody until tomorrow, when he is due to appear before Listowel District Court in Co Kerry.
