Beijing - A Chinese woman of 71 has been jailed for six years for drowning her newborn granddaughter because she was desperate for a baby boy to carry on the family name.

Yang Dongmei's daughter-in-law had already given birth to a girl and had a second in August 1998, the China Women's News service said. Yang drowned her while the mother was asleep.

China has credited its one-child policy, instituted to control a huge population which has reached 1.3 billion people, with reducing the population by 300 million births in the past 20 years.
