A woman was seriously injured when she was crushed against a pillar on board the Isle of Inishmore ferry yesterday in Holyhead.

The accident happened at about 1.15 p.m. on the sailing from Dublin, when the ship was docking at Terminal 3 in the north Wales port.

The woman and two children, believed to be travelling with a coach party, were struck by a heavy goods vehicle.

The woman was airlifted by North Wales police helicopter to Ysbyty Gwynedd, in Bangor, where her condition was described as "critical". Her name had not been released last night.

One of the children suffered "very minor" injuries and both were taken to Bangor hospital by taxi.

An Irish Ferries official said an investigation would be held.
