A 22-year-old woman is in a critical condition in Wexford General Hospital as the result of a fall from the balcony of an apartment block in Wexford town in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Gardaí and emergency services were summoned to the Quay West apartment block on Wexford town quays when it was reported a woman had fallen some nine metres (30ft) to the ground from the first-floor balcony of the apartment.

The woman was attending a party and the incident is reported to have occurred at abound 6am.

It is believed the young woman, who is from Kilmore in south Wexford, was one of eight or nine people attending a party which had continued into the early hours of the morning.

The woman was immediately removed to Wexford General Hospital with head injuries.

Supt Roche said Garda investigations into the fall are continuing. "We are continuing our investigations as to how the girl fell from the balcony and the circumstances surrounding the fall," he said.
