A WOMAN has been granted bail after she was charged with attacking a garda who was doused with boiling oil in Dublin on Sunday morning.
Garda Michael O’Shea of Kilmainham station received serious injuries during a domestic dispute call-out at Mary Aikenhead House, on James Street, in the south inner city.
Garda O’Shea, who is in his 20s, was taken to hospital to be treated for injuries to his face, neck and shoulder. A second man injured during the incident was also taken to hospital but was later discharged.
Yesterday morning, Rachel Hiheglo (27), a single mother of two children, who is originally from Togo and has an address at Mary Aikenhead House, was charged with assault causing harm to Garda O’Shea and Enzo Kone.
Garda Sgt Brendan Maloney told Judge Dermot Dempsey at Dublin District Court that there was no objection to bail provided the accused surrendered her passport and complied with bail conditions.
“A file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecution’s office, I cannot see there being directions before the end of July,” Garda Sgt Maloney said.
Defence solicitor Cahir O’Higgins said: “It is not a matter that will trouble the DPP for very long.”
He told the court that the alleged incident arose “in the context of a dispute”.
“I can confirm that her passport has been surrendered, that has been done; through me she will undertake not to apply for a further passport or other travel documents,” Mr O’Higgins also told the judge.
Judge Dempsey ordered Ms Hiheglo, who was not required to speak during the brief proceedings, to sign on at her local Garda station every Monday and Friday, between 7am and 8pm.
Ms Hiheglo was granted legal aid and ordered to appear again on September 12th next pending directions from the DPP.
