A Co Louth woman, whose womb was removed after she gave birth in 1992, has been awarded more than €250,000 by the High Court today.

Mrs Alison Gough (37) of Market House Lane, Ardee, Co Louth, sued Dr Michael Neary, who performed the hysterectomy and his employer, Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, Co Louth.

Mr Justice Richard Johnson found that Dr Neary was negligent when he removed Mrs Gough's womb after she gave birth to her first and only child in 1992.

In his evidence earlier this year, Dr Neary said after the delivery of Mrs Gough's son, excessive bleeding had started from the uterus, which was more than one would expect in normal caesarian sections.

Attempts to contract the uterus did not work, he said, and it had greatly distressed him to have to remove Mrs Gough's womb.

But Mr Justice Johnson said today bleeding could have been stopped on balance of probability.

Twenty-five women whose wombs were removed in the Drogheda hospital are pursuing similar action against legal action.
