A YOUNG woman has been charged with the murder of her brother at a house party in Co Kilkenny.
Caroline Brennan (18), Love Lane, Castlecomer, appeared before Castlecomer District Court yesterday.
Michael Brennan (22) died at a party in his uncle’s house at Barrack Street, Castlecomer, shortly after 3.30am on December 30th last. He was discovered with a knife wound to his upper body and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency services.
Supt Walter O’Sullivan of Kilkenny Garda station told Judge William Harnett that the DPP had directed that a charge of murder be brought against Ms Brennan in this case.
Sgt Teresa Philips, also of Kilkenny Garda station, told the court she arrested Ms Brennan outside Castlecomer Court yesterday morning.
Sgt Philips said she replied: “No, I’ve nothing to say,” when the charge was read to her.
Ms Brennan sat holding the hand of a friend to the rear of the small courthouse yesterday, wearing a white blouse and black trousers.
Supt O’Sullivan made an application to the court for Ms Brennan to be remanded in custody to Cloverhill until later this week.
Michael Lanigan, solicitor for Ms Brennan, said it was not his intention to seek bail for his client at this stage and he would be lodging a bail application to the High Court.
The judge remanded Ms Brennan in custody to appear at Cloverhill District Court later this week.
