Only first-hand witnesses to the 25-hour siege at Abbeylara, Co Longford, last Easter week are to be called to give evidence at an Oireachtas inquiry into the incident.
The inquiry beginning on Tuesday week, into the siege and fatal shooting by gardai of Mr John Carthy, will be carried out by a sub-committee of the joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Equality and Women's Rights.
Details of who is being called to give evidence are to be announced at a press conference next Wednesday. The Irish Times has learned they will include only those who were at the scene or involved in compiling the internal Garda report on the events.
The witnesses will include many of those who gave evidence at the inquest into Mr Carthy's death, including members of his family, gardai including the Garda Commissioner, Mr Pat Byrne, members of the Garda Emergency Response Unit who fired four shots at Mr Carthy, and the State Pathologist, Dr John Harbison.
Mr Carthy died on April 20th last year.
