BRITAIN: The husband of Mr David Blunkett's former lover defended his wife last night as revelations by their former nanny fuelled Conservative questions into allegations that the British Home Secretary abused his office. Frank Millar, London Editor, reports

Mr Stephen Quinn appealed for his wife Kimberley, who is ill in hospital, to be left alone and, without naming him, to Mr Blunkett to leave questions of paternity until after February when she is due to have her second child.

Confirming his loyalty to his wife following her secret affair with Mr Blunkett, Mr Quinn said:

"She is not the greatest sinner this country has produced. It's really not fair to keep on saying 'Oh my God, it's terrible' or whatever. We must have a sense of humanity, fairness, justice and reasonableness."

Mr Quinn said his wife was also distressed that their former nanny, Leoncia Casalme, had sold her story to the Daily Mail claiming Mrs Quinn had told her she had a "friend" who might be able to assist with her visa application.

However on top of questions about how Ms Casalme's visa came to be processed in just 19 days, the Conservatives yesterday claimed the former nanny should not have been granted residency rights when she was since she had not been in the UK for the full four years necessary.
