Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has signed a four-year extension to his contract that will keep him at the north London club until 2005.

"Arsenal Football Club is delighted to announce that manager Arsene Wenger has signed a four-year extension to his current contract, ensuring that he will remain in charge of the Gunners until 2005," the club website reported today.

The statement said Wenger would hold a news conference later today. Wenger (52) has been at the club since September 1996, taking Arsenal to the league and FA Cup double in 1998, the UEFA Cup final in 2000 and the FA Cup final this year.

The Frenchman has always insisted he would stay at Arsenal, despite reports linking him to Manchester United and Barcelona.

The decision comes only days before Arsenal expect to get permission from Islington Council to start work on a new 60,000-seater stadium at Ashburton Grove.
