Dissident Ulster Unionist Mr Peter Weir lost a legal fight yesterday to stop the North Down constituency association from dropping him as its candidate in the forthcoming general election.

In the High Court in Belfast Mr Justice Girvan lifted an injunction granted last month stopping the association from holding a meeting to de-select Mr Weir, a barrister currently suspended from the party.

Mr Weir said afterwards that he was disappointed at the decision, but he vowed to fight on.

In his reserved judgment lifting the injunction Mr Justice Girvan held that, because of Mr Weir's suspension, he was disqualified as an Ulster Unionist candidate and was not even entitled to be notified of constituency meetings.
