THE Murphys Irish Open Golf Championship takes place this weekend, ensuring a steady stream of southbound traffic towards Druids Glen in Co Wicklow until after it concludes on Sunday.

Traffic heading to the tournament from south-east Dublin, i.e. Dun Laoghaire, Shankill, Dalkey, Killiney and surrounding areas, should use the route through Bray, Greystones and Kilcoole. All other traffic from Dublin should use the Nil to Wicklow as far as Kilpedder and follow the signs from there.

Traffic approaching Druids Glen from Wexford should travel north on the Nil and turn off at the Newtownmountkennedy exit. From there, follow the signs right at Gregory's Garage on the R7-72 and head for Newcastle.

Iarnrod Eireann will operate an executive train service from Cork to Druids Glen on Saturday, departing at 8 a.m. Tickets cost Pounds 87 and include admission, full Irish breakfast, coach transfers and a four-course dinner.

Meanwhile, the road improvement work on the Naas Dual Carriageway between Newlands Cross and Rathcoole continues and a section of Main Street, Rathcoole, remains closed.

Due to the one-way system on the Leopardstown Road, traffic flow is westbound only from Whites Cross to the Brewery Road roundabout, while east- bound traffic is being diverted via Brewery Road and the Nil.

Major roadworks continue on the N1 at Five Roads, about five miles south of Balbriggan. Cluny Grove in Killiney is closed until mid-July but an alternative route is available via Avondale Road and Ballinclea Road.

Delays of up to 30 minutes are expected at peak times on the N3 in Meath, due to roadworks on the Dublin side of Dunshaughlin. Delays can also be expected on the Sallins side of Clane Village, Co Kildare, due to gas works.

Roadworks are also causing delays on the N9, on the Dublin side of Carlow town.

In Cork, delays are expected on the Ballyvourney-Kerry County Bounds route due to resurfacing. A contraflow system is in operation, so extra care is required.

A temporary traffic layout at the Carrigtohill bypass, at the western end of Tullagreine on the N25, means that traffic is being diverted.

There are also diversions in operation in Waterford, where all traffic approaching the city on the N9 must now use the Newrath diversion due to the closure of Terminus Street. Traffic leaving the city for the N9 must use the Rockshire diversion.

In Co Donegal, extensive environmental improvement works are taking place on Main Street, Ballybofey until the end of August. Roadworks continue on the N2 near Carrickmacross, on the Monaghan/Louth border.

Finally, Iarnrod Eireann has scheduled special Intercity services for Sunday's Munster Hurling Final between Tipperary and Clare at Pairc Ui Chaoimh in Cork. Trains will operate from Ennis, Limerick, Thurles, Templemore, Waterford and Dublin.

Details are available from Intercity stations or from 1850 366222.
