With good weather expected this bank holiday weekend, and hundreds of thousands due to take to the roads, the full reopening of the N7 will be welcome news to all who use the route. The repair work to Kyle Bridge, south of Kildare town, has been completed two weeks ahead of schedule.

Over 500,000 passengers are expected on air, bus and train routes.

Met Eireann is forecasting a dry and bright weekend with a few isolated showers. Weather will be somewhat changeable, it says, but such rain as there will be light and mainly in the west. Sunday is expected to be the warmest day of the weekend.

For those planning to leave this clement island, Aer Rianta says it is set to handle more than 194,000 passengers over the weekend. It is advising passengers to allow themselves extra time in their journey to airports.

The greatest number will pass through Dublin airport, which is anticipating over 148,000 passengers at its terminal building - an increase of 15 per cent over the same weekend last year. Shannon Airport expects in excess of 26,500 passengers, while at Cork Airport 10 extra flights have been added to the schedule to cope with the 19,500 expected passengers. Aer Lingus reports over 112,000 customers booked on its flights this weekend.

Iarnrod Eireann says it will carry 130,000 passengers on intercity trains at the weekend, and it will run over 30 extra trains. These include services from Cork and Limerick to Dublin, for the All-Ireland Rugby League final on Saturday, and the under-21s GAA semi-final on Saturday.

But it is warning of major disruption to its DART services from noon tomorrow until noon on Monday, with all north-bound services terminating at Lansdowne Road Station and all south-bound trains terminating at Pearse. A limited shuttle bus will run between Pearse and Sydney Parade stations.

A Sunday service will operate on the DART and the Cork/Cobh Arrow service on Monday. Also on Monday, the suburban services to Kildare, Dundalk, Drogheda, Arklow and Maynooth will be cancelled.

Bus Eireann expects up to 100,000 passengers on Expressway and provincial services between today and Tuesday. Today and on Monday services will operate under normal weekday timetables. On Sunday and Monday services will generally operate as on a Sunday, with some alterations. Normal services resume on Tuesday, with some additions.

To car drivers, the National Road Safety Council is appealing for a "slowdown". Statistics show, it says, more fatalities and injuries occur during the summer, when drivers tend to be less vigilant. Speed is the main factor in accidents.

Leinster

In Dublin, gas works will be in place at Churchtown. The existing single-lane set-up southbound approaching Firhouse on the M50 will be extended further north to the Ballymount interchange.

Kellystown Road in Rathfarnham is closed, with traffic being diverted along Ticknock Road and Harold's Grange Road. Roadworks continue on Charlemont Street. Clonliffe Road will be single-lane between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., until Saturday.

Filming in Temple Bar will cause obstruction. The Old Knocklyon Road is closed permanently to through traffic. Aston Place from Fleet Street to Aston Quay is closed. Drivers on the N7 will welcome the full reopening of the route, which links Dublin to the south and south-west.

In Westmeath, resurfacing work on the N4 east of Rathowen village means that temporary lights are in operation. Kildare sees construction of a new sewerage system in Kilcullen. Traffic on Main Street will be disrupted. Serious delays are expected.

The road between Carlow and Bunclody is now open in Kildavan at the Carlow/Wexford border. In Co Laois, resurfacing work continues in Abbeyleix.

Munster

In Cork, bridge construction work is under way on Lancaster Quay. Traffic and parking will not be allowed there, on the right-hand side between the junctions with Little Hanover Street and Woods Street.

In Waterford resurfacing on the N25 between the city and Kilmeaden will mean temporary lights between 8 a.m. and 5.30 p.m.

Connacht/Ulster

There are realignment works on the N16 Sligo/Enniskillen Road four miles west of Manorhamilton. Speed restrictions are in operation. In Leitrim, Quay Street is closed. There are roadworks on Main Street, Stranorlar in Co Donegal, and more on the Sligo side of Donegal town.

Drivers should be cautious on the Donegal bypass, with temporary traffic lights on the N15, just north of Donegal town. In Derry, there are roadworks on the A2 Strand Road at Meadowbank, Derry, while in Belfast diversions continue on Ribble Street from Newtownards to Tamar Street.
