Four people were killed in separate road crashes over the weekend, bringing the death toll on the Republic's roads this year to 213.

In the first of three fatalities between Saturday night and yesterday morning, the front seat passenger in a car died after the vehicle was in collision with a jeep at an intersection of the N3 near Navan. The victim was in his 40s.

Gardaí at Navan said the intersection was controlled by traffic lights and that there were disputed reports over which vehicle had the green light. The collision took place at 8.55pm on Saturday.

The two drivers were taken to hospital, where they stayed overnight. Their injuries were reported to be not serious.

Later on Saturday, at 10.30pm, a 44-year-old male pedestrian died after he was hit by a car two miles outside of Roscrea.

He was named as James McMahon from Assumption Park, Roscrea.

The incident occurred on the N7 at Racket Hall outside the Racket Hall Golf and Country Club. Gardaí said the driver of the vehicle stopped after hitting Mr McMahon.

The N7 was closed until 10.30am yesterday while Garda technical experts examined the scene.

In Dublin shortly before 4am yesterday, a 21-year-old motorcyclist was killed after losing control of his bike on the Burton Hall Road, at the Sandyford Industrial Estate at Leopardstown.

The man was taken to hospital, but was pronounced dead. He was the 22nd motorcyclist or pillion passenger to die this year, according to Garda statistics.

Earlier on Saturday a man died after a collision near Monasterevin, Co Kildare.

In that incident, 64-year-old Patrick Phelan from Ashfield Gardens, Portlaoise, died when the car he was driving collided with a truck on the M7 between New Inn and Monasterevin.

His female passenger was in a critical condition yesterday in the Midlands General Hospital in Portlaoise. A man was questioned in relation to the incident, and a file is to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
