Two shotguns, a pipe bomb and a quantity of ammunition have been recovered following a search of an open area in Dublin this evening.

The search was carried out in Kiltipper, Tallaght at about 4pm as part of an ongoing investigation into dissident republican activities.

Army bomb disposal experts were called to the scene to exam whether the pipe bomb was viable or not.

No arrests have been made and investigations are continuing.

Gardaí have stepped up operations against dissident republicans in recent weeks with a number of arrests.

Garda sources believe they thwarted a serious attack on a target in the North or Britain earlier this week following the discovery of a Real IRA arms stash in Dunleer, Co Louth on Monday.

The stash included a machine guns and mortar with ammunition.

Northern Secretary Owen Paterson said earlier this week that the British and Irish governments and the PSNI and Garda would work to "smoke" out dissident republicans and prevent them from destabilising the political process.
