A water-taxi service and a part-time traffic policing unit for rush-hour in Dublin are among the measures proposed by the Dublin Chamber of Commerce (DCC) in a new report.
Entitled "Unlocking the Gridlock - Short Term Measures for Improving Transport in Dublin 2002-04", the report details measures aimed at improving transport in Dublin over the short-term.
The measures could help improve conditions while Dublin awaits major pieces of transport infrastructure such as the port tunnel and metro rail system.
The measures being proposed include the following:
- Establishment of a part-time policing unit responsible for helping enforce traffic regulations during peak periods
- Development of a water-based taxi service, servicing stations around the "Bay" area - Dublin Docklands, Dublin Bay and the Liffey
- The introduction of a low-tech "transfer" ticketing system for bus and rail, allowing multiple journeys within a two-hour period.
- Government funding of major upgrading of the suburban Rail and DART networks - increasing passenger capacity 40 per cent
"The Chamber is highlighting the fact that while Dublin is waiting for the delivery of major pieces of transport infrastructure, such as the LUAS and Dublin Port Tunnel, there are numerous measures that can be adopted which will improve transport in the Greater Dublin Area over the next two years," Dublin Chamber of Commerce chief executive Ms Gina Quin said.
