Warship visit for Fourth of July

One of the largest warships in the world, the USS John F. Kennedy, is to visit Dublin for the US embassy's Fourth of July celebrations this year.

The 80,000 tonne aircraft, carrier will lie off Dun, Laoghaire harbour and as many as 10,000 people will be brought on board by ferry from the East Pier, according to the embassy.

A series of events involving the ship's crew will take place around Ireland. Senior US naval personnel will attend a ceremony in Wexford on June" 30th to commemorate Commodore John Barry, one of the founders of the US fleet and known as "the further of the American navy".

The US Atlantic Fleet band will take part in the Salthill Festival in Galway, on June 27th.

The John F. Kennedy has a crew of 5,200, is 1,051 feet in length and has a displacement of 80,000 tonnes. It is the height of a 23 storey building, and has a flight deck of 4.56 acres. Its anchors each weigh 30 tonnes.
