Food and medicine producers are to be asked by the Department of Justice to investigate the feasibility of introducing braille markings on their labels.
The Minister of State with special responsibility for disability, Ms Mary Wallace, said she would write to a range of producers and manufacturers to establish the additional cost of including braille on their packaging.
"The provision of braille markings on labels would provide huge independence for the blind", she said.
The Minister's remarks followed a call from her party colleague, Mr Pat Carey, for the introduction of braille on labels and packaging.
