THE VATICAN has announced that the theme for the 2012 International Eucharistic Congress, which takes place in Dublin, will be “The Eucharist: Communion with Christ and with one another”.

This, the 50th congress, will take place from June 10-17th and will mark the 80th anniversary of the 1932 Eucharistic Congress which represented a high point of Catholicism in Ireland.

The choice of theme arises from the fact that the celebration of the 2012 congress coincides with the 50th anniversary of the inauguration of the Second Vatican Council, which the Archbishop of Dublin, Dr Diarmuid Martin, has said was “a moment of renewal for the church’s teaching and for her understanding of herself as Body of Christ and Body of God”.

A communique from the Vatican’s Committee for International Eucharistic Congresses said the theme took its inspiration directly from the Vatican II document Lumen Gentium.
