A neatly-worked goal from Spanish midfielder Vicente gave Valencia a 1-0 win over a defensive-minded Celtic in the first leg of their UEFA Cup third-round tie tonight.
The winger drilled home from the edge of the area on 75 minutes after Amedeo Carboni had touched him a pass from a quickly-taken free kick.
Valencia dominated the game from start to finish but last season's Champions League finalists were denied a more comfortable winning margin by an inspired Robert Douglas.
The Celtic keeper pulled off a string of brilliant saves to give his side every chance of turning the tie around in the second leg in Glasgow on December 8th.
Two goals late in the second half from Ian Harte and Alan Smith earned Leeds United a 2-1 away win against Grasshoppers tonight.
But it could have been very different if the home side had converted a 68th minute penalty.
After early Leeds pressure, Grasshoppers took the lead through veteran striker Stephane Chapuisat who beat two defenders before scoring with a sweet shot from 25 metres.
In pouring rain and on a sodden pitch, Leeds became increasingly frustrated and they should have gone two goals down when England defender Rio Ferdinand fouled Uruguayan striker Richard Nunez on the edge of the penalty area.
Nunez hit a poor penalty which was saved by Nigel Martyn and five minutes later Harte curled a free kick from 25 metres out over the wall and into the top corner before Smith prodded home with 11 minutes left to seal the victory.
An 81st minute header from substitute Alun Armstrong was enough to give Ipswich Town a 1-0 win over Inter Milan in their tie.
Rangers were held to a 0-0 draw by Paris St Germain at Ibrox.
