A US Air Force transport plane has landed safely in Baghdad, Iraq, after apparently being hit by a surface-to-air missile.

The plane suffered an engine explosion shortly after taking off from Baghdad International Airport, said a senior Pentagon official.

One of the 16 passengers and crew members on board was slightly injured, said Air Force Captain Carrie Clear.

A senior Pentagon official described the explosion as a direct hit by a SAM missile, "like the DHL" incident that damaged a cargo plane departing the airport last month. That plane, too, returned to land safely
