Superbowl XXXIX will see defending champions the New England Patriots take on the Philadelphia Eagles in Jacksonville, Florida tomorrow.

A number of bars and restaurants in Dublin have been advertising the event all week, including Captain America's Bar and Restaurant on Grafton Street in Dublin and the Capital Bar on Aungier Street.

Ms Stefanie Flynn (21), from Boston ,who is currently studying at Griffith College, said the Superbowl is "the essence of American culture".

Stefanie, a life-long Patriots fan who is planning to watch the game at home with friends, said: "For many Americans, the Superbowl is bigger than Christmas.

"I don't think I know anyone back home who won't be watching it tomorrow night."

Irish bookmakers have reported brisk trading on the largest sporting event on the American sports calendar.

A spokesman for Paddy Power bookmakers said: "Since the games started being shown on Sky, demand for betting on American football has increased significantly. We have seen a large number of bets being placed on-line".

Last night the Patriots, favourites to retain the title, were being offered at odds of 1/3, with the Eagles at 12/5.
