Achill Island off the Mayo coast has been chosen as the location for a children's adventure film.

Achill Island off the Mayo coast has been chosen as the location for a children's adventure film.

Irish-born actor Patrick Bergin, who starred with Julia Roberts in Sleeping with the Enemy, is to star in the film, which is being shot by students at the School of Visual Art & Design at the Southern Adventist University in Tennessee.

About 25 students, under the eye of college professors, will work alongside film crews from Ireland on shooting the film on Achill from the end of May and during June.

The movie, Secret of the Cave, centres on an American teenage boy who visits relatives in Ireland and becomes embroiled in a mystery on Achill Island.

Westport-based Cllr Keith Martin, who has been promoting Mayo as a film location and helping the crew with pre-production, says this will be a major boost for the island.

"All Achill's major attractions, from the Atlantic drive to the deserted Famine village, will feature in the film," he says.

Cllr Martin says the film will be a feature-length advertisement for Achill and Mayo.

While it is hoped it may be shown in cinemas here, the film will go directly to DVD in the United States.
