Students in the United States who safely stopped their school bus and treated the driver after he apparently suffered a heart attack have been praised by police.

Jeremy Wuitschick grabbed the wheel, steered the vehicle towards the kerb, pulled the key out of the ignition and started chest compressions after the driver slumped over and passed out.

The 13-year-old told King-TV: “I was just thinking ‘I don’t want to die’.” Another pupil, identified as Johnny Wood, hurried to help with the chest compressions, while others called the emergency services.

Police were quickly on the scene in the town of Milton, Washington, and the 12 students on board the bus were escorted off.
