Ankara - The US White House and Congress have reached a "tentative agreement" on paying more than $1 billion that the United States owes the United Nations, the US Secretary of State, Ms Madeleine Albright, said yesterday.

"I'm pleased to report that a tentative agreement has been reached by the White House and congressional negotiators that would pave the way for the United States to pay our UN bills," Ms Albright told journalists accompanying President Clinton's visit to Turkey. Describing the deal as a "breakthrough," she said she hoped the accord "will in fact become final."
