Sanaa - The "longest-held foreigner" abducted by Yemeni tribesmen was freed yesterday and was safely in the capital, a security official said.

"American Steve Carpenter has been released safely today and arrived in Sanaa this afternoon," the offical said. Observers said Mr Carpenter, kidnapped on October 30th, was the longest-held hostage in a spate of abductions of foreigners.
