The new US Middle East envoy has attacked Israel over what he said were the "daily humiliations" suffered by Palestinians under Israeli occupation.
Mr William Burns, the assistant secretary of state for Near East affairs, told journalists after a meeting in Egypt with President Hosni Mubarak "there has been too much suffering and too much death for both Israelis and Palestinians.
"The humanitarian problem, the daily humiliations that ordinary Palestinians suffer under occupation are getting worse every day.
"It's time for all of us to try very hard to restore a sense of hope," he said. "We have no illusions about the difficulties involved, this will be very, very hard".
