US, British planes bomb Iraqi air defence base

US and British warplanes bombed what the US military said is an Iraqi air defence facility west of Baghdad this morning.

The US Central Command said the air strike was in response to "recent Iraqi hostile acts" against coalition aircraft patrolling a no-fly zone over southern Iraq.

"Operation Southern Watch coalition aircraft used precision-guided weapons today to strike an air defence command and control facility at a military airfield 240 miles west and slightly south of Baghdad," the statement said.

The central command said the attack was at 6.30 a.m. Irish time.
