Police in Uruguay have arrested a man accused of being a top leader of the Basque separatist group ETA, following an extradition request from Spain, Spanish officials said today.

Mr Jesus Maria Lariz Iriondo is wanted in Spain on suspicion of attacking a police car in 1984 and injuring two people. He is also under investigation for belonging to an armed group, aggravated robbery, property damage and arms possession.

A Spanish Interior Ministry spokesman pegged him as one of the outlawed group's most important leaders in South America. ETA commanders wanted in Spain commonly flee to Latin America.
