New York - The UN General Assembly yesterday elected Bahrain, Brazil, Gabon, Gambia and Slovenia to two-year terms on the 15-nation Security Council beginning on January 1st, 1998. They will replace South Korea, Chile, Egypt, Guinea-Bissau and Poland, who vacate their council seats at the end of this year.

Slovenia defeated the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) in a contest for the East European seat held by Poland.
