A LOYALIST paramilitary group has claimed that the IRA is planning an "imminent resumption" of its campaign in the North and has warned that it is prepared for such a development.
In a statement issued yesterday, the Ulster Freedom Fighters, a covername for the UDA, said that it had alerted its members who were "prepared for all eventualities".
It said that the Manchester bombing showed once again that republicans were not seeking a political resolution to the conflict.
However, the paramilitary group added that it remained committed to the peace process and called on the IRA to restore its truce.
After the IRA restarted its campaign with the Canary Wharf, London, bomb in February, the Combined Loyalist Military Command - an umbrella group of all loyalist paramilitaries - warned that IRA attacks would not go unchallenged.
The CLMC said that it would match the Provisionals "blow for blow".
One of the Guildford Four, Mr Gerry Conlon, was charged in Belfast yesterday with assaulting an RUC constable after police were called to a noisy party in the Lower Falls area.
Mr Conlon (42), from Osborne Park, in the Lisburn Road area of Belfast, was also charged with causing a breach of the peace outside the house at McDonnell Court on May 30th.
Mr Conlon, who was described as a journalist and author, was not called on to speak during the brief remand hearing at the Magistrates Court. He was allowed continuing bail to appear in court on July 8th.
