Two US soldiers were killed and four wounded in an ambush in a Shi'ite slum district in Baghdad. Two locals were later killed in a gunbattle between soldiers and Iraqis.

The deaths happened in the same area as yesterday's suicide car bomb attack on a police station earlier that killed at least 10.

A US military spokeswoman said the 1st Armored Division soldiers were ambushed last night as they patrolled the streets of Sadr City. Locals said at least two Iraqis had been killed in gunbattles with US troops who scoured the area backed by helicopters after the ambush.

The funerals of the dead are scheduled for late today.
