The RUC confirmed this evening that two of its senior officers have traveled to Bogota to assist the Colombian authorities investigating the activities of three Irish men arrested there more than two weeks ago.
A spokeswoman for the RUC refused to give details of the nature and scope of the visit or the identities and ranks of the officers.
However, a spokesman for the Garda told ireland.comthat it was possible the RUC were investigating crimes committed within their jurisdiction.
He said the only involvement the Gardaí had with the case was to initially identify the three men as citizens of the Republic. There were no plans to send Garda representatives to Colombia, he added.
The three, who are charged with holding false passports and training members of the FARC rebel group, were arrested on August 13th in Bogotá's El Dorado Airport on return from San Vicente de Caguan in the south-east of the country.
