Customs officers have seized over 30,000 cigarettes in Dublin and Kerry airports.
Some 14,000 cigarettes were seized yesterday when a woman (25) was stopped and searched at Dublin airport after arriving on a flight from Kiev.
She was arrested and charged and appeared before the Criminal Justice Court where she was remanded in custody until tomorrow.
In a separate seizure at Kerry airport 20,000 cigarettes were seized when a man (28) was stopped and searched after getting off a flight from Spain.
He was remanded in custody and due to appear before Tralee District Court later today.
A spokesman said the seizures represent a potential loss to the Exchequer of €12,000.
To date this year 1.8 million cigarettes and 281kg of roll-your-own tobacco (representing a loss to the Exchequer of €720,000) have been seized at Dublin airport.
Last year customs officers seized a total of 178.3 million cigarettes and 3,369 kg of tobacco.
