Garda reinforcements deployed last night after a row broke out at a travellers' halting site outside Longford.

A Garda spokesman said up to 20 people were involved in the fight which took place at a halting site on the Strokestown Road shortly after 8 p.m. Slash hooks were used in the fight and two mea were injured. Both were treated in hospital last night but their injuries were not serious.

Gardai believed three families were involved in the fight, one of whom had travelled from Dublin earlier last night. Gardai drafted in from neighbouring areas were still at the scene early today, but the situation was described as "calm".
