A man and a woman were today injured in an explosion at a house in Newcastle Co Down, the RUC said.

The blast occurred at the rear of a property in Ballaghbeg Park at Murlough outside Newcastle.

A hospital spokesman in Downpatrick, where the two injured people were taken, said they were the victims of an apparent pipe bomb attack.

He also confirmed that the 25-year-old man and 24-year-old woman had not been seriously injured in the explosion.

"We had two persons brought in from an alleged pipe bomb attack," the spokesman said.

"Both sustained minor injuries to the lower limbs and following treatment they will be discharged from hospital later today." It is understood the pair were standing alongside a car when the explosion occurred.

British army bomb disposal experts were called to the scene to investigate what caused the explosion.
