Two held over Galway cocaine haul

Two people have been arrested following the discovery of cocaine worth €500,000 in Co Galway this morning.

Two people have been arrested following the discovery of cocaine worth €500,000 in Co Galway this morning.

The 7kg seizure was made after gardaí stopped and searched a car on the outskirts of Gort.

A man and woman, aged 39 and 24, were arrested and are being detained in Galway Garda station under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice Act.

As part of a follow-up operation this afternoon, Gardaí searched two house in Moycullen where €100,000 in cash was discovered in one of the houses.

A Customs spokeswoman said the drugs had been imported through Shannon airport in a parcel originating in the USA.

The vehicle search was carried out in a joint operation by the Garda National Drugs Unit, local gardaí and Customs officers.

The operation is part of an investigation into organised crime gangs in the Galway and Limerick areas.
