Two fire fighters have died at the scene of a fire at a disused factory in Bray, Co Wicklow.

Two fire fighters have died at the scene of a fire at a disused factory in Bray, Co Wicklow.

The major fire was reported just after 10.30am when smoke was seen billowing from the derelict building. The building is just behind Superquinn on the town's Lower Dargle Road.

The two firemen, members of the Wicklow Fire Service, died when the building's roof collapsed.

A spokesman for Wicklow County Council said three units of the Wicklow Fire Service had brought the fire under control. He said a full investigation of the incident would be carried out by both them and and the Garda Siochana.

"Tragically, two very brave firemen were fatally injured as a result of this fire," he said.

"The Cathaoirleach, County Manager and Chief Fire Officer would like to convey their sincere condolences to the families, colleagues and friends of the two firemen."

A Garda spokesman said the men died at about 11.30am. "They are believed to be 25 and 40 year of age," he said.

"Their bodies will be taken to Loughlinstown Hospital where a Post Mortem will take place. The cause of the fire is still under investigation."

Garda technical experts and Health and Safety Authority (HSA) inspectors will examine the scene, which remains sealed off.

President Mary McAleese expressed her sorrow at the news of the tragedy. Extending her sympathies to the families and colleagues of the officers, she praised their "heroism and selflessness in making the ultimate sacrifice to ensure the safety of others".

Labour TD for Wicklow, Liz McManus said she was deeply saddened. "We are very grateful to the people of the fire service in Bray who have lost comrades today," she said.

Fine Gael Wicklow TD Billy Timmins also extended his sympathies to the firemen's families.

"They gave their lives in the service and protection of others and their time spent as members of the Wicklow Fire Service acts as an inspiration to us all," he said.
