The police feared Mr McCullough (21) was murdered after he went missing last Wednesday week from outside his north Belfast home.
This morning they confirmed that the body of a man discovered in Mallusk, Co Antrim, yesterday was that of Mr McCullough.
He had recently returned from Britain after it appeared the murderous paramilitary loyalist feud had ended. Mr McCullough was a close associate of jailed UDA leader Johnny "Mad Dog" Adair.
Police have not disclosed further details of the arrest.
Yesterday, the BBC received a call from the Ulster Freedom Fighters (UFF) claiming Mr McCullough had been murdered in retaliation for the killing of one of their most senior and revered figures John Gregg.
Mr Gregg was killed in February by Adair's notorious UDA "C-company", of which Mr McCullough was a senior member.
The police feared for Mr McCullough's safety when he was reported missing, believing he was the latest victim of the resurgent loyalist feud which has seen members of the Adair-led "C-Company" fighting the main rump of the UDA and the UFF.
The victim's father, William "Bucky" McCullough, was also a leading UDA figure and was murdered in 1981.
