If you think television dominates your home now, just wait until you see what's around the corner.

If you think television dominates your home now, just wait until you see what's around the corner.

Prepare yourself for interactive television, hundreds of channels and a personal video recorder that knows exactly what you like to watch and automatically records it for you.

The home of the future, which contains all these wonders, was unveiled at the launch of Science Week in the National Museum.

The museum and scientific organisations around the State will be running a number of events during the coming week.

Speaking at the launch, the Minister for Science, Technology and Commerce, Mr Treacy, stressed the importance of getting young people involved in the technology revolution.

He said that despite problems in the dot.com markets telecommunications was a huge growth area.

The Minister's remarks were supported by Mr James O'Riordan, whose company, Silicon and Software Systems, designed the "Home of the Future" presentation.

Mr O'Riordan explained to a audience of students from St Gerard's School in Bray that in the not too distant future, a set-top box will allow you to use your remote control to order a pizza through your television.

You will be able to pay for it online, pause what you are watching when your food arrives, and then catch up to "real time" in your programme at the click of a button.

In fact, you will have complete control over your television.

As if that wasn't enough, a personal video recorder system will browse through hundreds of digital channels and select, record and grade programmes according to how closely they fit your requirements.

There will be full Internet access through televisions, and videotapes will be replaced by hard disk drives.
