ANKARA - The Turkish government's bid for early elections was in doubt yesterday after a marathon meeting of the junior coalition partners failed to break a deadlock over formation of an "election" government.

Mr Mehmet Gozlukaya, a leading member of the conservative True Path Party, which met late into the night on Wednesday, said his party was at odds with the Islamist Prime Minister, Mr Necmettin Erbakan, on a deal to transfer power to True Path and lead the country to early elections.

Mr Erbakan had said that he would step down by the end of this month in favour of Ms Tansu Ciller to go to early polls.
