The high-profile trial of Princess Diana's former butler on theft charges was unexpectedly abandoned today after the jury was discharged for legal reasons.

The judge in the trial of Mr Paul Burrell, 44, discharged the original jury this afternoon after two and a half days of evidence, citing legal reasons. The exact reason for the discharge cannot be reported.

Mr Burrell, who worked for the princess for many years, denies charges of stealing more than 300 items from Diana's London home after her death in a 1997 Paris car crash.

He is expected to face a new trial at London's Old Bailey court tomorrow once another jury has been sworn in.
