Tens of thousands of trees are to be planted across Ireland during National Tree Week this year.

The event, which begins on March 1st, was launched this morning by President Mary McAleese, who planted a golden Irish yew in the Phoenix Park.

Over the past 25 years, some 500,000 trees have been planted by local authorities and private individuals and groups during the annual event. This year, 15,000 trees donated by Coillte are being distributed to schools and community groups throughout the country.

The theme of this year’s event, organised by the Tree Council of Ireland, is “Our Trees, Our Culture”. It is intended to celebrate the important role trees have played in Irish culture and highlight the vital role trees play in the environment.
