A tree planting ceremony took place at Merrion Square, Dublin, yesterday to mark the 20th anniversary of the Alone organisation, which cares for elderly people. It was founded in 1977 by a Dublin fireman, Mr Willie Bermingham, who has since died.

An oak sapling was planted in the Nelson Mandela garden, in the presence of the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Mr Brendan Lynch, the Dublin Fire Brigade Pipe Band and about 150 other people.
