Iraq's most revered Shia Muslim cleric, Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, said today he wanted a guarantee from the international community that elections would be held in the country by the end of the year.

In a written statement, Ayatollah Sistani said an unelected Iraqi government due to take power after June 30th should have strictly limited powers and should focus on preparing for elections.
