Two young women, believed to have English addresses, were killed in a road accident near Kilkelly, Co Mayo, yesterday. A third woman in the car was injured.

Their car collided with a jeep, whose driver was also injured. Fire brigade personnel used cutting equipment to free the dead and injured, who were then taken to Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar.

Gardai said the two dead women were in their late teens or early 20s.

Their car was British-registered, and gardai were working on the assumption the women were in Mayo on holiday. Last night gardai said the names would not be released until today. However, a Garda spokeswoman confirmed that the women had English addresses.
