A young German woman who yesterday fell 200 feet down the side of a mountain near St Kevin's Bed, Glendalough, Co Wicklow, was sufficiently recovered late last night to be able to talk to her English boyfriend by telephone from St Vincent's Hospital in Dublin.

The woman's boyfriend, who was injured while trying to rescue her, was admitted to St Colmcille's Hospital, Loughlinstown, for treatment.

The accident occurred at about 3.15 pm. A rescue operation involving the Dublin, Wicklow and Glen of Imnal mountain rescue teams was coordinated by gardai from Rathnew.

Rescuers were able to bring the man down the mountain by stretcher, but the main car park at Glendalough had to be cleared to enable an Air Corps helicopter to land and transport the woman to hospital.
