French police arrested three suspected members of the Basque armed separatist group ETA near the Spanish border today and media alleged they were travelling in a van packed with explosives.

The three were stopped at the French town of Saint Jean Pied de Port and reports alleged they were carrying as much as 160 kg (350 lb) of explosives as well as several fire arms.

Neither Spanish security nor government officials were available to comment.

In the past, ETA has frequently targetted holiday resorts and in June police found a car packed with explosives near seaside resorts on Spain's southern coast.
